Life's big decisions often come with big questions, and few are as deeply personal and financially intricate as the journey to build a family through IVF. Here at AllSkills Education, through our FLIT Financial Literacy project, we're dedicated to helping people navigate these waters with clear, practical guidance. We were recently delighted to collaborate once again with Clare Mansfield of Flowering Fertility, an organisation that offers wonderful peer support and expert access to those on this often-uncharted path.
Unpacking the 'Money Talk' Around IVF
It's no secret that talking about money can be a bit tricky in Ireland. When it comes to something as heartfelt as building a family, discussing finances can feel particularly sensitive, even a bit rude or transactional. This can lead to unspoken worries, especially when one partner might feel it 'must be achieved regardless of cost,' while the other quietly frets about the financial implications. Our workshops aim to open up these important conversations in a supportive and understanding environment.
Practical Steps to Manage IVF Costs
During our sessions with Flowering Fertility, we explored some very real and practical questions about managing the financial side of IVF. While the emotional journey is paramount, understanding the practical levers within your control can bring a great deal of peace of mind. We looked at things like:
- Maximising Tax Benefits: Understanding tax reclaims and how choosing who pays certain medical bills can ensure tax credits are fully accessed.
- Health Insurance & Drug Schemes: Navigating health insurance policies and the Drug Payment Scheme to ensure you're getting the most out of them.
- Clinic Negotiations: Learning about potential negotiations with clinics regarding timing of payments and overall cashflow management.
- 'All-Included' Packages: What do these truly mean, and are they always the best option for your specific circumstances?
The Power of Support and Disclosure
Another vital aspect we discussed was the importance of support – both governmental and philanthropic schemes, as well as employer benefits. We encourage people to be aware of potential supports even at the stage of evaluating potential employers. Beyond that, there’s the incredible warmmth of support from friends and family. This brings up questions around disclosure – how much information to share, and being open to accepting 'loving help and goodwill' when it's offered. It's about finding the balance that feels right for you and your family.
A Heartfelt Collaboration
This marks our fourth time collaborating with Flowering Fertility, and each time, we're struck by the lovely sense of peace, calm, and positivity that Clare Mansfield and Shane McCarthy bring to participants. As Clare herself noted, the financial side of fertility treatment can carry so much emotion and uncertainty, and it's a conversation that's often overlooked. We’re so grateful to help make this part of the fertility journey feel a little more manageable and a lot less daunting.
At AllSkills, we believe in supporting our community through every stage of life's financial journey. Our work with Flowering Fertility reflects this, highlighting how practical financial literacy can help by bringing clarity to even the most emotional decisions. Financial knowledge won't pay the bills for you but can just reduce some of the stress around how money flows at this time. We have the greatest respect for the work being done to support those travelling this difficult journey.
